Custom logo design is money well spent.  Your business's livelihood could depend on it.  Your logo is the public "face" of your business.  It needs to be unique and distinguishable from your competition and stand out in the marketplace. Here are some things to consider when having a logo designed for your business or product:
Legibility:  It doesn't matter how cool your logo looks if the comsumer can't read it or figure out what it's for.
Uniqueness:  You wan your logo to be memorable and not be confused with other logos., especially of your competition.  You also want it to capture the spirit of your business or product.

Color:  Logo designs should be limited to 3 or 4 colors at the most, and be printable in one color or black and white for newspaper use..  They should be effective on something as small as a business card or as large as a store sign.  The colors chosen should be appropriate with the theme or of your business or type of service you offer.  People should associate your logo with your company and that the logo "relates" with the characteristics of your business.

Avoid fads or images that are easily out-dated (unless its a retro business, of course). Your logo should be timeless enough to be used for years to come and become established in the public's mind. 

 Your logo is the first thing the consumer sees and he/she are going to judge you by it no matter how good your business is.  Make your logo count.
